Alaska Automobile
Insurance Plan
Service Center

Effective July 1, 2002,
personal automobile insurance through the Alaska Automobile Insurance Plan will be processed through the Alaska Service Center. Commercial automobile insurance will continue to be processed by the commercial servicing carrier, Progressive Insurance.

What is the Alaska Service Center?

  • The Alaska Service Center was established as a result of the withdrawal of the Alaska Plan’s two LAD servicing carriers which had serviced private passenger business for many years. Allstate Insurance Company terminated their contract December 31, 2000, and State Farm Insurance Company is terminating their contract on July 1, 2002, the date the service center becomes operational. The Service Center will be managed from AIPSO’s Western Regional Office in San Francisco, California.

  • The Alaska Plan Governing Committee approved the service center as a means of reducing costs to the companies receiving assignments. Companies receiving a low volume of Plan applications find it costly to maintain a separate system for their Plan business.

    • With the introduction of the new Service Center, all dealings with Alaska customers such as insurers, consumers, producers, and regulators will be handled from the Western Regional Office. The Service Center will handle all underwriting, accounting, and customer service functions, with the aid of AIPSO and their home office in Johnston, Rhode Island. Its operations and processing services include, but are not limited to:
  • underwriting (ordering MVRs, CLUE reports, rate pursuit)
  • policy issuance and maintenance
  • premium billing and collections
  • policy renewals and cancellation notices
  • customer service
  • producer commissions and 1099 tax forms

  • What About Claims Handling?

The only service function not performed by the Service Center is claims handling. The Service Center must notify all Plan manual holders of the offices where Plan policyholders’ claims are processed. Companies are required to provide the Service Center with the name, address and telephone number (either toll-free or collect) for the claims office that will handle their Alaska Automobile Insurance Plan claims. The Alaska Service Center also has a coverage confirmation unit that verifies if coverage was in effect at the time of a loss. The coverage confirmation unit’s telephone number is 800-227-4659.
