The Virginia Automobile Insurance Plan (VAIP) was created on January 1, 1945, by the
State Corporation Commission in order to provide insurance coverage for those people who
cannot obtain insurance through the voluntary market. In this capacity, the VAIP ensures
that these applicants are shared equitably among all insurers licensed to write auto
insurance in Virginia.
Any insurance agent holding a valid Property & Casualty license for the state of
Virginia and wishing to write business through VAIP must be certified by the Board of
Governors in accordance with the Virginia Plan Producer Certification Program.
Consumers possessing a valid Virginia driver's license and a vehicle registered in
Virginia are eligible to be assigned through VAIP. For further information, consumers
should consult their agent or broker.
On our site we will publish documents related to the Plan as they become available. We
hope you find this site to be a valuable source of the insurance information you need, and
we welcome your comments and suggestions.
